And yet, here are these damn aliens, casually living forever and growing back severed body parts and breathing underwater and building things nobody can break and having better sex than you do as if it were just another day at the office. InJan Dagmar begins to send a complex message to the artifact, by beaming at it in every frequency from microwave to X ray, and by tapping it mechanically. Most First Contact books are about the First Contact as seen from the human perspective, but this book has the distinction of being from the alien perspective, which I found refreshing.

Slowly over the course of many years, it gains more and more of an understanding of humanity, enough so that it can pass for human, though it can also shift into any creature or mimic haldemna object at any time it needs.
